Dr. Sang Lee is certified in both Pediatric General/Thoracic Surgery and Adult General Surgery but has practiced exclusively as a Pediatric Surgeon for the entirety of his professional career.
Born and raised in Chicago, Illinois, he graduated with Honors from Dartmouth College in 1997, with a degree in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. He received his medical degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine in 2003. He then received all of his surgical training at Harvard Medical School, completing internship and residency in General Surgery at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center from 2003-05 and 2007-10, a research fellowship at Boston Children’s Hospital from 2005-07, and Pediatric Surgery fellowship at Boston Children’s Hospital from 2010-12.
Dr. Lee joined the faculty at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill immediately following his training in 2012. There, he served as Assistant Professor of Surgery in the Division of Pediatric Surgery. Locally, he held administrative positions such as Director of the Surgical Skills Program in the General Surgery residency, Inpatient Medical Director of the NC Children’s Hospital surgical floor, and Physician Service Leader for Pediatric Surgery. Nationally, he serves on multiple committees in national Pediatric Surgical organizations, such as the Industry Advisory Committee in the American Pediatric Surgical Association, the Education Committee and the Program Committee in the Section on Surgery of the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the Rare Tumors Committee in the Children’s Oncology Group.
His clinical interests in Pediatric Surgery include neonatal surgery, advanced minimally invasive surgery, and pediatric surgical oncology. He has published over 30 manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals on a myriad of topics from Pediatric Surgery to basic science in surgical nutrition.
He shares a vision with Drs. Keshen and Stolar of elite level Pediatric Surgery care for the communities of central coastal California.
