Dr. Tamir H. Keshen arrived in Santa Barbara from St. Louis in 2007 with the vision of developing a top-notch, comprehensive Pediatric Surgical program to care for all the children of the Central Coast. He has established services at Ventura County Medical Center, Community Memorial Hospital of Ventura, Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital, and Marian Regional Medical Center. He is board-certified in both Pediatric Surgery and General Surgery. His surgical interests include advanced minimally-invasive surgery for thoracic and abdominal diseases of the newborn, infants, and children as well as surgical oncology and trauma.

Dr. Keshen received his Bachelor of Arts degree in English at the University of Virginia and earned his medical degree from New York Medical College. He completed his General Surgery residency at the University of Iowa, during which time he completed a two year NIH–sponsored postdoctoral fellowship in neonatal metabolism and nutrition at the Children’s Nutrition Research Center USDA/URS in Houston. He then completed his Pediatric Surgery fellowship at Children’s Hospital of Alabama at the University of Alabama.

In 2002, he joined his wife, Roberta Sengelmann, MD, in St. Louis as faculty at Washington University School of Medicine. He served as Assistant Professor of Pediatrics and Surgery and Director of Pediatric Minimally-invasive Surgery at St. Louis Children’s Hospital. His research focused on lipid metabolism and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease in obese adolescents.

Dr. Keshen has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals and is an active member of the American College of Surgeons Southern California Section, American Academy of Pediatrics, International Pediatric Endoscopic Group, Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons and serves on several committees of the American Pediatric Surgical Association.
